Yr. 8 Science Focus Study: Physical and Chemical Change

Year 8 will be starting their next Science Focus Study on Monday 7th of August. It will be a busy time and an exciting time to do Science. In addition to the activities surrounding this Chemistry topic, the class will be engaging in Science Week by an excursion on Thursday 17trh to Science in the City**.
Students will also be making a start on their individual Science research projects. In addition, in conjunction with Open Day at Korowal, the labs will be a hive of scientific activity on Saturday 12th.

Topic Overview

In this topic, students will be investigating what happens when physical or chemical changes occur. Students will be able to:

  • describe the behavior of matter in terms of particles;
  • explain how heat energy in particles is related to their movement;
  • predict the effect of changing heat on different states of matter;
  • explain how changes in physical properties during evaporation, condensation, boiling, melting and freezing are related to heat energy.

Students will also:

  • investigate chemical changes, including photosynthesis, respiration and chemical weathering;
  • compare arrangement of particles in physical and chemical changes and the reversibility of the process;
  • have a look at the recycling process in the context of this unit.

**Copies of information about the excursion and permission notes have been given to the students, but additional copies are also available on NoticeBoard.
