In the last hours of Week 7 there was huge excitement at Korowal. The sky rumbled and Kindy’s screamed. In that lovely Summer tradition, the clouds opened as the students left school, dashing for cover or brazenly walking to the bus stop without wet weather gear. Only it wasn’t Summer, but the second week of Autumn! It was however, a relief from the very hot week we have had.
So swiftly we have passed the midway hump of Term 1. At this stage it is important to remind us all that Easter falls earlier than it did last year. Good Friday is on 25th March and Easter Monday the 28th March. The Easter break is therefore separate from the end of term holiday period with the first day of our two-week holiday commencing on Friday April 8th (for students), the day after the school fun run.
This week we held the High School Swimming Carnival on the very hot Thursday. The classes went all out to create a unique carnival atmosphere. Year 7 students arrived as super heroes, Year 8 as animals, Year 9 dressed as their teachers Liz and Mark, and Year 10 as hippies. Participation was high and the fun was infectious. We especially thank Liz and Kizz, Mark and Steve for the organizational aspects, and all of the students and staff for making this a wonderful day.
Week 4 of our Summer term is over and the students are quite settled into the rhythms of school. We have received a positive response from parents and grandparents to our call for volunteers to assist us with small gardening and cleaning jobs about the school, and we will be drawing up a roster this week.
The highlight of Week 3 was the gift of the Korowal School bell by Fung of Sinofeld. It was no mean feat to get it to Hazelbrook. They hired a cherry picker to remove and lower this very heavy brass bell, then trolleyed it from the car to the front steps of our school. It is much bigger than we recalled, but then again it was 20 metres high! So now the decision needs to be made of where and how we hang this beautiful beast. It needs filing and cleaning, and the chime is rich and mellow. It may be some months before it is hung. Meanwhile, for this week, it is in the foyer of the admin area, should you wish to have a peek.
Korowal has settled into the new year’s routines this week with all classes back, and our new Kindergarten children have three days of school routine under their belts. We are off to a terrific start! Pathways have returned from their camp in the Kangaroo Valley where Years 11 and 12 journeyed together and paddled the Kangaroo River in absolute isolation. Not one whisper of phone reception exists in this lovely peaceful valley, and the only sounds are birds, laughter and singing as the group paddles the river.
Welcome back to Korowal for 2016, and welcome anew to the families who just arrived with us.
The 2015 school year has now ended for students and staff, with the office closing last Friday, 18th December. It has been a year of great satisfaction in many ways.
The final moments of our school year are upon us with three student days remaining this week, and we have begun the phase of signing off on another successful year at Korowal. There will be one last post from the ‘Window With A View’ next week and then a lovely long Summer break (and trip to Japan for some).
We find ourselves on the downhill run to the Summer holidays as we end Week 8. There were many events at Korowal this week with the Year 3,4,5 Class Concert, the Japan Tour information evening, Class 6 Graduation Ceremony, and a visit from the Headspace team to introduce their service for high school students in maintaining sound mental health.
