Physical Education
From Kindergarten right through to Year 10, we encourage active participation with the aim of nurturing healthy bodies and healthy minds. Planning for practical PE lessons is guided by the NSW Physical Literacy continuum which has interrelated critical aspects:
-
Movement competencies
-
Tactical movement
-
Motivation and behavioural skills
-
Personal and social attributes
The sports and physical activities offered are many and varied and can take place in different locations. We have a multi-purpose indoor hall, basketball court with line markings for a variety of sports, a small school oval and an outdoor gym circuit, all on-site at Korowal School. With access to the school bus, high school PE classes can take advantage of local facilities in addition to our school resources. High School PE excursions can involve visits to many different local sites, such as: council swimming pools, the local crossfit gym, bushwalking trails in Hazelbrook and Lawson, climbing gyms, local skate bowls, and the Hazelbrook Club for lawn bowls and croquet.
Specialist coaches from sporting leagues such as hockey, cricket, AFL and Tennis are brought into the school to run programs, as well as specialist instructors for other sports such as dance, circus, fencing and even snowboarding. Primary school students participate in an intensive learn to swim program each year and our annual sporting events include:
-
Primary School Swimming Carnival – Year 3-6
-
High School Swimming Carnival – Year 7-10
-
Primary School Huff & Puff Gala Day
-
Whole School Fun Run
Primary PE classes include the explicit teaching of Fundamental Movement Skills, to better prepare children for the dynamic and tactical movement required when playing team sports. These Fundamental Movement Skills include: hop, skip, leap, side gallop, catch, overarm throw, two-hand strike and dodge.
We also take sports teams in both primary and high school to local inter-school gala days, for sports such as basketball, futsal, cricket and AFL. On all of these occasions, participation and fun is our primary aim and we never select school sports teams in a competitive way. All students with an interest are invited and encouraged to join a team. We take pride in our students' positive and enthusiastic representation of our school at these sporting events, win, lose or draw. We encourage good sportsmanship, inclusion, teamwork and respect for the rules of play.
