Devi Mamak – Piano
I am a classically trained pianist. I have been playing piano my whole life and teaching piano since 1981. I am also a composer with published works, recorded an album with my six-piece world fusion / classical / jazz band and perform locally with a disco funk band as well as several duets.
I understand that each student has different goals and needs and so therefore tailor my lessons to suit each individual. I have always prided myself on being a thorough and patient teacher. To me, being a pianist or a musician of any kind is about expressing the music, learning how to listen and to be creative. I love the idea of helping my students play music for the rest of their lives – whether it be professionally or privately for themselves. Music is the food of the soul and is such an integral part our lives. It is the universal language and will bring you joy for the rest of your life.
Whilst the lessons are and should be fun, I also pride myself in laying a strong foundation for each student in:
• Technique
• Theory
• Scales
• Chords
• Musicality
• Composition
• Timing
• Creativity
• A range of different styles from classical through to modern styles.
• I can also help students sit for exams with ANZCA, Trinity College London or AMEB if required.

Kalon Captain – Drums
I have increasingly directed my teaching towards the cultivation of creativity, freedom of movement and, as a result, freedom of expression. We will focus on hand technique, grooves from all around the world, music reading as well as creating our own unique rhythms. Above all I believe music is about self cultivation through creativity and having fun; this is what I seek to nurture in all my students.
I have been in love with music from a very young age, my first instrument being the piano at the age of three. I began my journey into the world of percussion at the age of five, having taken an interest in the Egyptian tabla (Darbuka) and the music of the Middle East. At the age of nine I began tabla lessons with Tarek Sawires as well as joining the African drumming group ‘Hands Heart and Feet’. I began drum set lessons at the age of 11 with Frank Corby (Bondi Cigars) and began my own Funk/Rock band as well as playing with ‘King Parrot Samba’ for a number of years.
I have now been playing the drum set for 16 years, completing a Bachelor of Music Performance at The Australian Institute of Music and performing regularly throughout Sydney. During these years I have had the privilege of working with some of Australia’s finest drummers, namely Andrew Gander, Nic Cecire, Ari Hoenig (USA), Tim Firth and Simon Barker.
