At Korowal School, we believe in nurturing the whole child within their social and cultural environment. Our staff and teachers work in dynamic ways to create a learning atmosphere where students are encouraged to thrive, discover their own paths, and fully engage in their educational journey.
Central to our approach is the belief that every student should have a voice.

Support Wellbeing
We employ numerous dedicated strategies to ensure that wellbeing is promoted and fostered within our School including:
- Dedicated Wellbeing team
- Inclusive Education Team
- Open Dialogue Approach
- Restorative Practices
- Year Mentors and Stage Advisors in High School
We believe that personal growth flourishes through connections with others. Korowal School strives to create a safe and supportive environment where students, teachers, and families feel valued, and where respectful relationships are cultivated.
Our learning environment is designed to:
- Support the physical, social, academic, and emotional development of students
- Minimize the risk of harm
- Provide policies and programs that develop self-worth and foster personal growth
- Uphold mutual respect and the school’s values
- Ensure equal opportunities for all.
Korowal School also provides dedicated support for student wellbeing through our Wellbeing team, High School Mentors, Stage Advisors and primary teachers. Together, they play a crucial role in guiding students through their academic and personal development. We offer dedicated weekly “Mentor Time” in High School, sharing resources, and strategies to help students build a sense of connection and belonging, and a positive sense of self.
We also believe that a strong partnership between our School and your home is crucial to student wellbeing. Korowal actively involves parents and the broader community through workshops, events, and open communication, ensuring that we work together to support your child’s growth and development.
Inclusive Education
At Korowal School, we believe that every student can learn. To achieve this, we use Universal Design for Learning (UDL), a framework that makes our curriculum flexible and accessible by providing multiple ways of engagement, representation, and expression. This approach allows us to accommodate diverse learning styles and abilities, creating a learning environment where every student can succeed—whether they need additional support to achieve at grade level or require extension beyond it.
Our commitment to inclusion is supported by a dedicated Inclusive Education Coordinator and a skilled team of Learning Support teachers and teachers’ aides. These professionals work closely with classroom teachers to provide universal and differentiated support, ensuring that each student receives the help they need to succeed academically and socially. By fostering an inclusive environment, we aim to empower all students to reach their full potential within a supportive and compassionate school community.
Open Dialogue
Open Dialogue is a cornerstone of our approach to student wellbeing, emphasizing open, honest communication and collaborative problem-solving. Guided by the principle of “nothing about me, without me,” Open Dialogue ensures that students are actively involved in discussions and decisions regarding their wellbeing.
This approach is built on several key principles: immediate help, social network perspective, flexibility and mobility, responsibility, psychological continuity, tolerance of uncertainty, and dialogism. These principles ensure that our methods are responsive, inclusive, and centred on the needs of each child.
Since 2019, Open Dialogue Network Meetings have been integral to supporting student wellbeing at Korowal, with every staff member trained annually. These meetings bring together all the important people in a student’s life—parents, carers, teachers, and other supporters—to collaborate in support of their wellbeing and academic success.
Aligned with our core values, Open Dialogue fosters healthy, honest relationships within our community. It cultivates compassion, equity, respect, and empathy, while encouraging resilience, active listening, and openness. Through candid and non-judgmental conversations, we create a supportive environment that strengthens connections and promotes mutual understanding.
Restorative Practices
Restorative Practice is another key component of our commitment to building a kind and respectful community at Korowal. Focused on accountability, empathy, and collective responsibility, this approach moves beyond traditional discipline to repair relationships and enhance our school culture.
We view conflict and mistakes as opportunities for growth. Restorative Practice encourages students to take responsibility for their actions, understand their impact on others, and engage in making amends. This process not only resolves conflicts but also deepens our sense of community by fostering mutual respect, understanding, and forgiveness.
Restorative conversations, circles, and collaborative problem-solving are integral to our approach. These practices provide a structured yet compassionate framework for addressing issues, ensuring that all voices are heard and that resolutions are fair and inclusive. By focusing on healing and reconciliation, Restorative Practice helps students develop empathy, responsibility, and the skills needed to build and sustain healthy relationships.
This method invites insight, accountability, and a clear definition of consequences, emphasizing behaviour and actions rather than the person. Harmful, abusive, or offensive behaviours can be addressed, with the goal of accepting accountability and finding ways to restore relationships.
Restorative Practice is most effective when it is explicit, deliberate, consistent, and capacity-building. We recognise that not every situation can be immediately addressed through group dialogue. Sometimes, individual conversations are necessary before bringing people together. However, our ultimate goal is always to restore relationships and uphold the values of our School community.
Our commitment to wellbeing
At Korowal School, our commitment to student wellbeing is unwavering. Through a holistic approach that integrates support systems, inclusive practices, and restorative methods, we ensure that every student feels seen, valued, and empowered to thrive in their educational journey and beyond.
